Advancements in novel neurotechnologies, such as brain computer interfaces and neuromodulatory devices such as deep brain stimulators, will have profound implications for society and human rights. While these technologies are improving the diagnosis and treatment of mental and neurological diseases, they can also alter individual agency and estrange those using neurotechnologies from their sense of self, challenging basic notions of what it means to be human. As an international coalition of interdisciplinary scholars and practitioners, we examine these challenges and make (...) recommendations to mitigate negative consequences that could arise from the unregulated development or application of novel neurotechnologies. We explore potential ethical challenges in four key areas: identity and agency, privacy, bias, and enhancement. To address them, we propose democratic and inclusive summits to establish globally-coordinated ethical and societal guidelines for neurotechnology development and application, new measures, including “Neurorights,” for data privacy, security, and consent to empower neurotechnology users’ control over their data, new methods of identifying and preventing bias, and the adoption of public guidelines for safe and equitable distribution of neurotechnological devices. Abstract In this paper I undertake an in-depth examination of an oft mentioned but rarely expounded upon state: suspended judgment. While traditional epistemology is sometimes characterized as presenting a “yes or no” picture of its central attitudes, in fact many of these epistemologists want to say that there is a third option: subjects can also suspend judgment. Discussions of suspension are mostly brief and have been less than clear on a number of issues, in particular whether this third option should (...) be thought of as an attitude or not. Stress is one of the most powerful experiences to influence health and disease. Through epigenetic mechanisms, stress may generate a footprint that propagates to subsequent generations. Programming by prenatal stress or adverse experience in parents, grandparents, or earlier generations may thus be a critical determinant of lifetime health trajectories. Changes in regulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) by stress may enhance the vulnerability to certain pathogenic factors. This review explores the hypothesis that miRNAs represent stress‐responsive elements in epigenetic regulation that are potentially (...) heritable. Recent findings suggest that miRNAs are key players linking adverse early environments or ancestral stress with disease risk, thus they represent useful predictive disease biomarkers. Since miRNA signatures of disease are potentially heritable, big data management platforms will be vital to harness multi‐generational information and capture succinct yet potent biomarkers capable of directing preventative treatments. This feature would offer a unique window of opportunity to advance personalized medicine. (shrink)

In several works Teresa Brennan examines how, contrary to social notions of the separate and contained self, all that exists in the natural world is connected energetically. She identifies a “foundational fantasy” whereby the ego comes into existence and is maintained by the notion that it controls the mother. The effects of this fantasy are socially oppressive and, in the technological era, environmentally disastrous. M;y examination of narratives and images in ancient myth, popular culture, literature, and art suggest ways to (...) counteract the destructive fantasy through re-symbolization of the relation to what Brennan understands as the original/living nature, which is correlated to the mother's body. In this paper, Tarskis notion of Logical Consequence is viewed as a special case of the more general notion of being a theorem of an axiomatic theory. As was recognized by Tarski, the material adequacy of his definition depends on having the distinction between logical and non logical constants right, but we find Tarskis analysis persuasive even if we dont agree on what constants are logical. This accords with the view put forward in this paper that Tarski indeed captures the (...) more inclusive notion of theoremhood in an axiomatic theory. The approach to logical consequence via axiomatic theories leads us to grant centrality to inference schemas rather than to full-fledged arguments and to view the logically valid schemas as a subclass of generally valid schemas. Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho é discutir o processo de inclusão de alunos com deficiência/necessidades educacionais especiais no Ensino Superior, destacando algumas questões sobre a prática pedagógica que vem sendo realizada na Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná – UNIOESTE. Fundamenta-se na Psicologia Histórico-Cultural que permite compreender como ocorre o processo de desenvolvimento do sujeito a partir do estudo dos fenômenos em sua historicidade, em um processo dialético, contemplando as dimensões da totalidade. A educação desses alunos, embasada numa legislação que (...) vem se ampliando nos últimos anos, necessita, na maioria dos casos, de algum tipo de atendimento educacional especializado como apoio e complementação do trabalho docente. As práticas pedagógicas realizadas, historicamente, na maioria das universidades ainda apresentam uma concepção de desenvolvimento humano sustentada pelo caráter biológico. Compreende-se que tais orientações são coerentes com a formação de um homem que se adequa à sociedade capitalista que preconiza por uma formação unilateral, com aquisição de competências restritas e imediatas. Como resultado, espera-se refletir sobre a importância de uma prática pedagógica inclusiva, que contribua para a construção de um sujeito crítico e consciente, que possa se apropriar do conhecimento científico e concluir seus estudos com qualidade. Inclusion and higher education: pedagogical practices with students with disabilities/SEN in the perspective of historical- cultural psychology Abstract: The objective of this work is to discuss the process of inclusion of students with disabilities / special educational needs in Higher Education, highlighting some questions about the pedagogical practice that has been carried out at the State University of Western Paraná – UNIOESTE. It is based on Historical-Cultural Psychology that allows to understand how the process of development of the subject occurs from the study of phenomena in their historicity, in a dialectical process, contemplating the dimensions of the totality. The education of these students, based on legislation that has been expanding in recent years, needs, in most cases, some kind of specialized educational assistance as support and complementation of teaching work. The pedagogical practices carried out, historically, in most universities still present a conception of human development sustained by the biological character. It is understood that such guidelines are consistent with the formation of a man who fits the capitalist society that advocates unilateral training, with the acquisition of restricted and immediate skills. As a result, it is expected to reflect on the importance of an inclusive pedagogical practice, which contributes to the construction of a critical and conscioussubject, who can appropriate scientific knowledge and conclude his studies with quality. Inclusión y enseñanza superior: prácticas pedagógicas con alumnos con deficiencia/NEE en la perspectiva de la psicología histórico-cultural Resumen: El trabajo objetiva discutir el proceso de inclusión de alumnos con deficiencia/Necesidades Educativas Especiales en la enseñanza superior, señalando cuestiones sobre la práctica pedagógica realizada en la Universidad Estatal del Oeste del Paraná. El estudio está fundamentado en la Psicología Histórico-Cultural que permite comprender cómo ocurre el desarrollo del sujeto desde el estudio de los fenómenos en su historicidad, en un proceso dialéctico, considerando las dimensiones en su totalidad. La educación de esos alumnos, basada en una legislación que está siendo desarrollada desde los últimos años, necesita, en la mayoría de los casos, de algún tipo de atendimiento educacional especializado con el apoyo y la complementación del trabajo docente. Históricamente, las prácticas pedagógicas realizadas en la mayoría de las universidades aún presentan una concepción del desarrollo humano apoyada en la característica biológica. Como resultado, es esperado repensar la importancia de una práctica pedagógica inclusiva, que contribuya para la construcción de un sujeto crítico y consciente, que pueda apropiarse del conocimiento científico y concluir sus estudios con cualidad. Las personas dedicadas a otorgar servicios de la salud tienen el compromiso legal, ético, profesional y humano de velar por la salud y el bienestar de la sociedad. Un médico no sólo debe formarse en el ámbito académico y técnico, también debe construir y trabajar en su ética profesional. La actualización médica continua en medicina basada en evidencia y el continuo adiestramiento en el área práctica y clínica, si bien son de suma importancia, deben ir de la mano con la (...) aplicación de los principios éticos tales como el respeto por la autonomía, la beneficencia, no maleficencia al paciente y la justicia. El análisis de casos clínicos reales a la luz de la ética es un ejercicio muy enriquecedor para trascender en nuestra práctica diaria. No solamente es de gran ayuda para detectar y prevenir conductas que pudieran vulnerar o atentar contra la dignidad de los pacientes, sino para reafirmar el valor y la centralidad de la persona humana en el abordaje médico. Jane Addams ha sido considerada una de las personas más importantes e influyentes en la historia de los Estados Unidos y esta categorización, en especial para una mujer nacida en el siglo XIX, nos incita a pensar en una personalidad apasionante. Ahondar en la vida y obra de esta mujer no defrauda, aunque dificulta ofrecer una imagen completa – si eso fuese posible – de su poliédrica figura. En este artículo esbozamos algunos rasgos biográficos de Jane Addams en (...) el contexto donde desarrolla principalmente su labor – el centro social Hull House en Chicago – para detenernos en su concepción sobre la acción social de su tiempo y los presupuestos epistemológicos, éticos y políticos que fundan su trabajo social. Pretendemos abordar la faceta de Addams en tanto que trabajadora social (sólo a efectos analíticos dada la interseccionalidad de su producción) a través de algunos tópicos como el debate sobre la responsabilidad individual o social de la pobreza; Hull House como instrumento de abordaje de la cuestión social; la cooperación interclasista, el igualitarismo, y la participación de la comunidad en la resolución de sus problemas; los fundamentos empíricos y pragmáticos de su pensamiento y acción; y el carácter antiopresivo y reformista del Trabajo social que Addams focaliza en los niveles de intervención grupal y comunitaria ya que son desde los que se podrá llevar a cabo la reforma social. Este artigo traz para a cena reflexiva da docência universitária, os saberes, as práticas e as narrativas de si que professores, de uma universidade pública do Estado da Bahia, Brasil, produzem ao documentarem suas experiências no Ensino Superior, numa interface com a formação de professores para atuação na escola básica. O objetivo do estudo foi compreender a profissão docente tecida por professores do Ensino Superior no cotidiano de práticas educativas desenvolvidas na universidade e sua relação no processo de formação inicial (...) de professores para a atuação na Educação Básica. Ancora-se numa metodologia qualitativa, tendo como método a documentação narrativa de experiência pedagógica, conforme princípios postulados por Suárez (2007). Os resultados sugerem que as experiências pedagógicas e educativas de professores universitários emergem, também, da prática profissional na universidade, em contextos de relação com os estudantes. As narrativas de si revelam como a profissão docente é tecida em escolhas e movimentos que o professor produz ao documentar suas experiências, constituindo um princípio de horizontalidade que emerge do trabalho colaborativo e do modo próprio como cada professor faz imersão em sua história de vida, de formação acadêmica e atuação profissional para produzir saberes e vivências na docência universitária. El artículo es una investigación introductoria de la filosofía de la educación de Jane Addams en los primeros años de actividad del settlement Hull-House. Esto incluye su etapa desde sus inicios en 1889 hasta el cambio político y epistemológico que experimentó Addams cuando se opuso firmemente a la participación bélica de los Estados Unidos a la Primera Guerra Mundial en 1917 y cuando se comprometió de forma sólida con el movimiento sufragista pacifista y la educación de las mujeres en (...) los años 20. El objetivo es examinar la crítica de Addams sobre los desajustes sociales que afectaban a la infancia y la adolescencia del Chicago de finales de siglo XIX: el “estado de insensibilidad estética,” la liberación del espacio doméstico y la corrupción política en las pandillas. En particular, el trabajo analiza la noción de educación socializada y su relación con la demanda de creación de espacios lúdicos públicos o pleasure grounds. Las actividades lúdicas y educativas organizadas en el parque infantil tenían un significado artístico, cultural y político que facilitaba la socialización de la democracia y la materialización de la reforma y el progreso lateral. New York, N.Y.: Peter Lang, 1991. Pp. 109. Evil is deeply and endlessly fascinating to the religious mind. On (...) the one hand, it challenges religion. The existence of the evils within our ken poses a threat to the rationality of central tenets of theism; the presence of overwhelming evils within our lives can threaten the viabil· ity of our religious attitudes and practices. On the other hand, religions typically offer strategies for coping with evil. They propose explanations of its origins that may aid us in understanding it, and they con· tain salvific practices that are meant to lead to redemption from sin or the cessation of suffering. So religious responses to evil are bound to be complex, and this complexity will inevitably be reflected in the treatment of evil in academic discourses. In addition, the present academic division of labor results in religion being studied in many disciplines. Each of them has its own traditions and agendas, and this often leads to a diversity of approaches that gives interdisciplinary dis· cussion of religious responses to evil something of the air of conversa· tion after Babel. The three books under review here, which represent the disciplines of philosophy, religious studies, and theology, illustrate nicely both the complexity and the diversity. Jane Mary Trau, who is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Barry University, has written a short essay in analytic philosophy of religion proposing a solution to the logical problem of evil. The problem arises from the fact that there are arguments purporting to show that the proposition that God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent is inconsistent with the proposition that evil exists. One way to solve the problem would be to find a possibly true proposition such that it is consistent with the proposition ·that God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent and together with that proposition entails that evil exists. Alvin Plantinga's celebrated free-will defense offers a solution of this sort. Trau's alternative solution is a version of the familiar greater-goods defense. Trau's main claim is that it is possible that evil has positive value. An evil has positive value if it is logically necessary for some greater 525 526 BOOK REVIEWS good, and it certainly seems to he possible that some evils have positive value. Thus, for example, suppose God creates nothing other than two angels, A and B. Nothing interrupts the felicity of either hut a mild pang of sorrow felt by A, to which B responds with compassion. A's sorrow is logically necessary for the greater good of B's compassionate response to A's sorrow. Hence A's sorrow is an evil that has positive value. Moreover, the proposition that evils with positive value exist is consistent with the proposition that God is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnihenevolent. So the existence of evil is consistent with the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnihenevolent deity. In other words, Trau's version of the greater-goods defense does seem to provide a solution to the logical problem of evil. But that is not to say that all the evils there actually are or even all those we know about do or could have positive value. Thus it does not follow, without further assumptions, that the existence of all the evils there actually are is consistent with the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnihenevolent deity. In a discussion of natural evil near the end of her hook, Trau acknowledges the need for such additional assumptions. She says: "Four assumptions underlie the claim that natural evils have positive value: (1) The material universe has positive value. (2) The material universe must function in a way that requires the occurrence of natural evils as secondary effects. (3) The material universe is either the best or the only possible universe. El presente artículo aborda, desde el análisis feminista, dos ideas clave del estudio y posterior representación de la violencia asesina contra las mujeres: la violación y la culpabilidad de las víctimas. La mirada feminista descubre todo un ámbito de comprensión al colocarse desde la perspectiva de las víctimas y cuestionar algunas de las ideas más aceptadas y generalizadas alrededor de los asesinos de mujeres. Jane Addams (1860-1935), activista y pensadora feminista estadounidense, nos permite reencontrarnos con una perspectiva del feminismo de antaño. Su trabajo intelectual como escritora y filósofa pragmatista fue muy influyente para el sufragio en Estados Unidos y la creación de leyes que buscaban mejorar las condiciones laborales de las mujeres y poblaciones afrodescendientes. También fue cofundadora de la primera residencia social de Estados Unidos que apoyó la población inmigrante europea, conocida como la Hull-House. Además de ser la primera mujer en (...) la Universidad de Yale en recibir un Master of Arts honorario, también fue la primera mujer ganadora del premio Nobel de la Paz en 1931. El presente texto es el primer capítulo de su libro titulado A New Conscience and an Ancient Evil, el cual trata sobre el trabajo sexual y el arduo camino hacia su abolición. Este trabajo indaga en algunas discusiones alrededor del problema de la materia, marcando puntos de encuentro y divergencias entre algunos elementos presentes en las teorías queer, los nuevos materialismos y el feminismo materialista francófono. Más específicamente, se preguntará por qué consecuencias teóricas y políticas podrían tener las diversas conceptualizaciones de la materia y lo material en las elaboraciones de cinco referentes indiscutidas de esas corrientes de pensamiento: Judith Butler, Paola Tabet y Nicole-Claude Mathieu y Elizabeth Wilson y Jane Bennett.


Someone who believes “I believe it will rain” can easily be mistaken about the rain. But it does not seem likely, and might even be impossible, that he is wrong about the fact that he believes that it is going to rain. How can we account for this authority about our own beliefs – the phenomenon known as first person authority? In this paper I examine a type of theory proposed, in distinct forms, by Crispin Wright and Jane Heal (...) for an explanation of our authority. Both authors claim that our second-order beliefs (of the form “I believe that p”) are constitutive of the first-order beliefs that are self-ascribed in them (beliefs of the form “p”) and both try to derive the necessity of first person authority from this constitutive relation. My paper analyses and criticizes the two proposals and suggests a non-constitutive, alternative account of first person authority. (shrink)

Jane Elllen Harrison (1850-1928) fue una pionera: fue la primera mujer académica de Inglaterra, una de las primeras mujeres en cursar Estudios Clásicos en Newnham College de Cambridge, la primera mujer en recibir un doctorado honoris causa LLD (Doctor of Laws) en la Universidad de Aberdeen y la primera profesora de Cambridge.

El cuidado de sí es cuidado de lo más humano de cada uno de nosotros. La convicción nuclear que lo rige es siempre la misma: que lo humano puede intensificarse y crecer. Y que el peligro reside siempre en la degeneración. Intensificar lo humano es ir hacia lo “más humano”. En absoluto se busca la “superación” o el “más allá” de lo humano. Este artículo es un intento de relacionar la lectura que hace Foucault del tema del cuidado de sí (...) con la urgente necesidad de repensar hoy el lugar de lo educativo como lugar propio para ese cuidado. Para tal fin, se propone el concepto de altertopía educativa, como lugar, no solo de resistencia al dominio de la banalidad contextual, sino de gestación de la fuerza revolucionaria. (shrink)

The abortion debate rages on. Yet the two most popular positions seem to be clearly mistaken. Conservatives maintain that a human life begins at conception and that therefore abortion must be wrong because it is murder. But not all killings of humans are murders. Most notably, self defense may justify even the killing of an innocent person.Liberals, on the other hand, are just as mistaken in their argument that since a fetus does not become a person until birth, a woman (...) may do whatever she pleases in and to her own body. First, you cannot do as you please with your own body if it affects other people adversely. Second, if a fetus is not a person, that does not imply that you can do to it anything you wish.
